Wool Rug Cleaning — Done Right
Wool is one of the most beautiful — and most misunderstood — rug fibers. It demands a gentle, pH-balanced process, controlled drying, and a cleaner who knows the difference. That's us.
Why It Matters
Wool Requires a Different Approach
Wool is a natural protein fiber — the same chemistry that makes it soft and resilient also makes it vulnerable to the wrong cleaning methods. Most carpet cleaners aren't equipped to handle it properly.
What damages wool rugs
- ✕Steam cleaning — high heat damages wool fibers and can cause irreversible shrinkage
- ✕Alkaline detergents — strip natural lanolin and weaken the fiber structure
- ✕Harsh scrubbing — breaks down the pile and causes fuzzing or pilling
- ✕Machine washing — agitation distorts the shape and loosens knots
- ✕Leaving wet — wool holds moisture and will mildew if not dried properly
Our Method
Our 6-Step Wool Cleaning Process
Every wool rug goes through the same careful process — no shortcuts, no guesswork.
Inspection
We examine fiber type, dye stability, construction, and any problem areas before choosing the right cleaning method.
Dusting
Dry soil and debris are mechanically beaten out of the pile — removing up to 80% of particulate before any water touches the rug.
pH-Balanced Wash
Wool is protein-based and sensitive to alkaline cleaners. We use pH-neutral solutions that clean deeply without damaging the fiber.
Gentle Rinse
Thorough rinsing removes all cleaning agents, preventing residue buildup that attracts future soil.
Controlled Drying
Wool must dry slowly and evenly. We use climate-controlled drying to prevent shrinkage, distortion, and mildew.
Final Grooming
Pile is brushed back into alignment and the rug is inspected before being wrapped for return delivery.

Types of Wool Rugs We Clean
Hand-Knotted Wool Rugs
Traditional hand-knotted pieces from Afghanistan, India, and Turkey — cleaned with the care their craftsmanship deserves.
Tufted Wool Rugs
Machine or hand-tufted wool rugs with latex backing require special handling to prevent delamination during cleaning.
Flatweave Wool (Kilim)
Kilims and dhurries have no pile and need careful wet-cleaning to prevent dye migration between colors.
Wool Blend Rugs
Wool blended with cotton, silk, or synthetic fibers — we identify the blend and adjust our process accordingly.
Antique & Heirloom Wool
Older rugs with fragile dyes and fibers get our most conservative approach — tested before any cleaning begins.
New Zealand Wool Rugs
Prized for their softness and sheen, NZ wool rugs respond beautifully to our gentle immersion wash process.

Wool Rug Cleaning — FAQ
How much does wool rug cleaning cost?
Wool rug cleaning starts at $2.00 per square foot. Free pickup and delivery is always included — no hidden fees.
Can wool rugs be steam cleaned?
No — steam cleaning uses high heat that can cause wool to shrink and damage the fiber structure. Wool requires a gentle, pH-balanced wet-wash process with controlled drying.
How long does wool rug cleaning take?
Most wool rugs are returned within 7–10 days. Wool must dry slowly and evenly to prevent shrinkage, so we never rush the drying process.
Do you clean antique wool rugs?
Yes — antique and heirloom wool rugs receive our most conservative approach. We test dye stability before cleaning and use the gentlest methods available.
Do I need to be home for pickup?
No — just leave your rug on the porch. We'll pick it up and return it without you needing to be home.
